NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates

Application

Read Before Applying

A complete application to this program contains the following:

-Application Form, submitted below
-Current Transcript, an unofficial transcript is acceptable - upload below
-Two Letters of Recommendation, sent by faculty from your home institution or elsewhere who know you well via email or postal mail. Email letters to mjscott@chem.ufl.edu with subject line "Recommendation for Summer Research Applicant (your name)". Mail letters to the address below the application form.

Students Applying for Domestic, France, South America, and Ghana REU Programs:
This form is intended for all students who wish to spend a summer in the UF Chemistry or Zoology Departments or at a site in France or South America. Before or immediately after completion of this form, you are required to arrange for two letters of recommendation to be sent to the email addresses as noted above (or if using postal mail, to the address below). Applicants must not be graduating seniors. Sophomores are particularly encouraged to apply to the program at Florida. Applicants who know they want to continue with medical school instead of graduate school are discouraged from applying. Applicants from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Please disregard the section labelled LSAMP unless you have LSAMP funding.

Students Applying for the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Award:
This form is intended for students who wish to spend a summer abroad. We expect that all applicants have received funding from an AMP program and that they have previous research experience. Applicants who know they want to continue with medical school instead of graduate school are discouraged from applying. You will be required to provide the name of a mentor (professor, AMP coordinator) in your AMP who knows you well. Before or immediately after completion of this form, you are also required to arrange for two letters of recommendation from faculty who know your academic and research abilities well to be sent to the email addresses as noted above (or if using postal mail, to the address below). You will also upload a copy of your current transcript so make sure you have this. Applicants must not be graduating seniors (non-graduating seniors OK) and must fulfill NSF US citizenship requirements. Applicants from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

The LSAMP Center for International Undergraduate Research has established a target application window in addition to its formal deadline. The program will start reviewing applications on Monday Oct 20, 2008 and will make offers to strong applicants starting shortly after this date. The formal application deadline is Jan 15, 2009 - though late applicants who have a passport may be evaluated if any slots remain open after the formal deadline. The early application window has been established because of the significant time necessary to obtain a passport and visa, and to optimize coordination with participating LSAMP and REU programs.

If you have any questions regarding the application,
please do not hesitate to email mjscott@chem.ufl.edu or call 352-846-1165 (M-F 9AM-4PM).

Award Conditions

The research awards in this program are for projects that must be at least a full summer and are generally 12 weeks long (Check with your specific site for exact dates). Awardees are expected to be good citizens within the program and are required to participate in all REU activities. This program wants to be inclusive and we will promote your research widely, and occasionally, like for award ceremonies and poster sessions, we will also contact family members - we'll always try and give advanced notice by e-mail to you so you can let us know if this is a problem. An approximate list of expectations is shown below:

  1. Work full-time (40+ hours per week) in the laboratory over the summer term.
  2. Complete an on-line assessment survey within your first couple months and plan on another after the program. These should be about 15 minutes long.
  3. Prepare a one page abstract after a few weeks of research to be submitted to the program office.
  4. Try and write up the results of your research for publication in a peer-reviewed journal in the field, with the advice and consultation of your mentor and his/her graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.
  5. Plan to submit an abstract on your research for a regional or national meeting in the discipline of your mentor sometime during the Spring of your award year or the following Summer.
  6. Continue your research in a laboratory during the academic year following the Summer term, as your class schedule permits. [optional]
  7. Adhere to the expectation that REU awardees are "ambassadors" for the program and good communicators generally. Check your emails regularly and respond in a timely fashion.
Note - many of these activities significantly strengthen your resume and professional preparation.
*I understand and agree to the Award Conditions:
